Then summer 2018, she subjected the cast to further torture by demonically playing werewolves, thus she's never allowed to play again. Currently, Zofie is 'married' to Jesse as half of 2018-2019's publicity officers though they aim for an amicable divorce in April. Spring 2019 has seen Zofie think it was a good idea to direct a show, namely [[Princess Ida]], she's still unsure if she is wrong or not but oh well, all these axes aimed at her neck clearly say she's not.

[[Ruddigore]], or 'Ruddygore' (as it was originally spelled and, thus, adopted as the title of this production) was performed in the [[Annex Theatre]] on 14th-17th February 2018. The score was adapted by [[Isaac Treuherz]] for a folk band, with the set and costumes following this folkish aesthetic, with vines and flowers in abundance.

== About the Show ==

The show was a 'folksy rehashing' of Gilbert and Sullivan's Ruddygore. With an air of folk instrumentation, we built upon a woodland concept and a rejuvenated score to tell this funny, satirical and - at times - tender story. From the outset, we wanted this production to be new, to reimagine the characters, story and music, to update it and see what elements edure and which adapt. To realise this change, we not only incorporated traditional folk instrumentation, but the music was tweaked to facilitate this change, taking influence from the rhythms and structures of classic jigs and polkas. Adding to this theme, we fused elements of traditional highland and ceilidh dances to give the music and story a fresh avenue through which to breathe and express a sense of history and community so prevalent throughout the story.

We also examined the characters, their motivations and interpretations and discovered interesting insights into their thoughts and wants, the stories they tell. A major change in terms of the characters was gender swapping the character of Dick Dauntless to 'Fanny Fearless', played by [[Abby Pardoe]], which opened up new avenues of interpretation. Moreover, the chorus was reworked so there was a full SATB chorus in both Act I and II, allowing for not only more harmony options, but also the inclusion of village men in the bridesmaid songs and female baronets in the Ghost songs.

Patience 2018 (Harrogate)

'Patience, or Bunthorne's Bride' was performed by LOpSoc on 16th August 2018 in the Harrogate Theatre at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. The orchestra and stage crew were provided by the venue. The production retained all the main features that originally came from the [[Patience 2018|Annex Run]] in June 2018. There were, however, changes to the cast as two of the principles were unable to join the company, with the role of The Duke of Dunstable being taken on by [[Barnaby Wilson]] and the role of Major Murgatroyd by [[Ben Walker]], creating new dynamics between the trio of men which was enjoyable to watch. The chorus, despite losing some of its original run members, gained new ones, including the Director [[Abby Pardoe]] and Musical Director [[Bridie Strachan]].

The production was very well received at the festival. [[Amber Courage]] won Best Female Voice and [[Bridie Strachan]], [[Tim Lutton]] and [[Liam Chan]] were awarded Best Musical Director. [[Abby Pardoe]] was nominated for Best Director, [[Rhona Graham]] and [[Tzofia Rolton]] were nominated for Best Costumes and the Chorus were nominated for Best Show.

'''Fiona Elizabeth''' or '''Fifi''' is a BSc Maths student, who doesn't seem to believe she's part of LOpSoc, even though she definitly is. She was super excited to play Double Bass for the society for [[Mikado 2017]], with her very in your face, white Double Bass. She was even more excited to play Double Bass for [[Ruddygore 2018]], but she wasn't good enough at 'folk'. Not to worry though, Fiona made up for this, by being in the band for [[Patience 2018]]. This was then furthered by her being dragged kicking and memeing, to the chorus for [[Patience 2018 (Harrogate)]]. Now she accepts that she is forever part of LOpSoc, and WILL be in the band for [[Princess Ida 2019]] and is being convinced into running for Tour Sec.

''A Saxon kingdom and Viking settlement are on the brink of war. The only way to ease the tensions looks to be the marriage of Prince Hilarion and Princess Ida, the heirs to those great powers. But on the day they were due to meet, news arrives the Ida has renounced all men and has formed a women's university. Before tensions can rise further, Hilarion gathers his friends and, posing as female students, infiltrates the college to try and woo Ida back.''

LOpSoc performed Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Princess Ida' in the Annex Theatre, 2019. The devised concept was that of medieval England, with those from the court of Hildebrand becoming Saxons, and those of Gama becoming Vikings. Varying alterations were made to the libretto and score to accommodate for this and Ida herself became a shieldmaiden.

"Princess Ida is a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta that makes a foray into the realms of poetry - based on The Princess, a narrative poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, it is the pair’s only operetta written entirely in blank verse. Unfortunately the show was not considered a contemporary success, but LOpSOc intend to rectify that with their ambitious reimagining of the action in Early Medieval England with an Anglo-Saxon prince and a Viking princess whose father, Gama, is the Jarl of a Viking settlement, seeking to increase his influence by marrying into Hildebrand’s royal line.

An exciting and funny operetta, Princess Ida is making a comeback into the LOpSoc repertoire after nine years since its last performance. With beautiful musical numbers and a wide array of personalities composing its principal characters and chorus, this is a unique show in both the G&S collection and in LOpSoc’s.

''Lovesick maidens are besotted with Bunthorne, a moody and handsome poet, but he has eyes only for the simple milkmaid, Patience. The problem? Patience doesn't do 'love'. Hipsters, Rugby boys and coffee presents an exciting story.''

LOpSoc performed Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Patience' in the Annex Theatre, 2018. The concept was born by varying members, particularly [[Abby Pardoe]], to have a hipster coffee shop concept. The female chorus became hipster girls, whilst the male chorus became rugby lads with their team called the Heavy Dragoons. Lady Jane thus owned the coffee shop, with Patience being a barista within it, whilst Bunthorne and Grosvenor were hipster slam style poets. The production will be taken to the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival for [[Patience 2018 (Harrogate)]].

== About the Show ==

"Patience is the sixth collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan and was first performed in 1881. All G&S operettas contain at least an element of parody, and for Patience, the main thrust of the plot comes from the satire of the aesthetic movement. An intellectual and artistic movement at the time, aestheticism focused on things being beautiful instead of having a deeper meaning and can be characterised by the phrase ‘Art for Art’s sake’. In the show, this attitude is exemplified by the two rival poets, Bunthorne and Grosvenor, and the chorus of ladies who adore them.

I initially chose to pitch Patience because I saw a production at the International Gilbert and Sullivan festival and laughed my socks off. Despite the fact it was written with a very specific time and context in mind, the libretto is still razor-sharp as it works to skewer ‘fad culture’ in general. We immediately jumped to thinking about how we could make Patience even more relevant for modern audiences, especially the mostly young/student crowd in Southampton.

It was an easy choice to swap out 19th Century Aesthetes for 21st Century hipsters. ‘Hipsterism’ is a somewhat nebulous concept, but for the purposes of the show, we’re taking it to mean young adults with non-mainstream fashion tastes, a passion for ‘vintage and blurry’ over ‘digital and clear’, and a healthy dose of snobbery for anyone perceived to be ‘normal’. The obvious parallels to the Aesthetes meant that we actually didn’t need to change any of the libretto or lyrics at all and the show still makes perfect sense. Bringing the rest of the characters into the new millennium was also surprisingly easy, as I think you’ll see when you meet them...

Of course, you don’t need to know any of this to enjoy the show! The fact is that nearly 140 years after it was performed, Patience is still as witty and as charming as it ever was, and we’re sure you’ll have a gay old time with us."

'''Tzofia''' or '''Zofie''' (or who even knows there are far too many names at this point) is a BA Music student who joined LOpSoc to costume [[Ruddygore 2018]] and haunt the back of the room during rehearsals. She was a producer for [[Patience 2018]], continuing to haunt the back of the room and terrorise the cast and AMD by standing at the front with a camera. Then summer 2018, she subjected the cast to further torture by demonically playing werewolves, thus she's never allowed to play again. Currently, Zofie is 'married' to Jesse as half of 2018-2019's publicity officers though they aim for an amicable divorce in April. Spring 2019 has seen Zofie think it was a good idea to direct a show, namely [[Princess Ida]], she's still unsure if she is wrong or not but oh well, all these axes aimed at her neck clearly say she's not.

''Lovesick maidens are besotted with Bunthorne, a moody and handsome poet, but he has eyes only for the simple milkmaid, Patience. The problem? Patience doesn't do 'love'. Hipsters, Rugby boys and coffee presents an exciting story.''

LOpSoc performed Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Patience' in the Annex Theatre, 2018. The concept was born by varying members, particularly [[Abby Pardoe]], to have a hipster coffee shop concept. The female chorus became hipster girls, whilst the male chorus became rugby lads with their team called the Heavy Dragoons. Lady Jane thus owned the coffee shop, with Patience being a barista within it, whilst Bunthorne and Grosvenor were hipster slam style poets. The production will be taken to the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival for [[Patience 2018 (Harrogate)]].

== About the Show ==

"Patience is the sixth collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan and was first performed in 1881. All G&S operettas contain at least an element of parody, and for Patience, the main thrust of the plot comes from the satire of the aesthetic movement. An intellectual and artistic movement at the time, aestheticism focused on things being beautiful instead of having a deeper meaning and can be characterised by the phrase ‘Art for Art’s sake’. In the show, this attitude is exemplified by the two rival poets, Bunthorne and Grosvenor, and the chorus of ladies who adore them.

I initially chose to pitch Patience because I saw a production at the International Gilbert and Sullivan festival and laughed my socks off. Despite the fact it was written with a very specific time and context in mind, the libretto is still razor-sharp as it works to skewer ‘fad culture’ in general. Patience 2018 (Harrogate)

'Patience, or Bunthorne's Bride' was performed by LOpSoc on 16th August 2018 in the Harrogate Theatre at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. The orchestra and stage crew were provided by the venue. The production retained all the main features that originally came from the [[Patience 2018|Annex Run]] in June 2018. There were, however, changes to the cast as two of the principles were unable to join the company, with the role of The Duke of Dunstable being taken on by [[Barnaby Wilson]] and the role of Major Murgatroyd by [[Ben Walker]], creating new dynamics between the trio of men which was enjoyable to watch. The chorus, despite losing some of its original run members, gained new ones, including the Director [[Abby Pardoe]] and Musical Director [[Bridie Strachan]].

The production was very well received at the festival. [[Amber Courage]] won Best Female Voice and [[Bridie Strachan]], [[Tim Lutton]] and [[Liam Chan]] were awarded Best Musical Director. [[Abby Pardoe]] was nominated for Best Director, [[Rhona Graham]] and [[Tzofia Rolton]] were nominated for Best Costumes and the Chorus were nominated for Best Show.

''A Saxon kingdom and Viking settlement are on the brink of war. The only way to ease the tensions looks to be the marriage of Prince Hilarion and Princess Ida, the heirs to those great powers. But on the day they were due to meet, news arrives the Ida has renounced all men and has formed a women's university. Before tensions can rise further, Hilarion gathers his friends and, posing as female students, infiltrates the college to try and woo Ida back.''

LOpSoc performed Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Princess Ida' in the Annex Theatre, 2019. The devised concept was that of medieval England, with those from the court of Hildebrand becoming Saxons, and those of Gama becoming Vikings. Varying alterations were made to the libretto and score to accommodate for this and Ida herself became a shieldmaiden.

== About the Show ==

"Princess Ida is a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta that makes a foray into the realms of poetry - based on The Princess, a narrative poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, it is the pair’s only operetta written entirely in blank verse. Unfortunately the show was not considered a contemporary success, but LOpSOc intend to rectify that with their ambitious reimagining of the action in Early Medieval England with an Anglo-Saxon prince and a Viking princess whose father, Gama, is the Jarl of a Viking settlement, seeking to increase his influence by marrying into Hildebrand’s royal line.

An exciting and funny operetta, Princess Ida is making a comeback into the LOpSoc repertoire after nine years since its last performance. With beautiful musical numbers and a wide array of personalities composing its principal characters and chorus, this is a unique show in both the G&S collection and in LOpSoc’s.

'''Delyth''' or '''Zofie''' (or who even knows there are far too many names at this point) is a BA Music student who joined LOpSoc to costume [[Ruddygore 2018]] and haunt the back of the room during rehearsals. She was a producer for [[Patience 2018]], continuing to haunt the back of the room and terrorise the cast and AMD by standing at the front with a camera. Then summer 2018, she subjected the cast to further torture by demonically playing werewolves, thus she's never allowed to play again. Currently, Delyth is 'married' to Jesse as half of 2018-2019's publicity officers though they aim for an amicable divorce in April. Spring 2019 has seen Delyth think it was a good idea to direct a show, namely [[Princess Ida]], she's still unsure if she is wrong or not but oh well, all these axes aimed at her neck clearly say she's not.

'''Sebastian'' is doing a Masters in Law, after doing his undergraduate at [redacted]. He was confronted by LOpSoc members at the freshers' fayre in 2018 and came along to his first meeting. Pretty quickly he was hooked. Sebastian had been in choirs, musical theatre productions and Shakespearean works previously so Light Opera became a nice middle grounds for him. LOpSoc was an amazing mechanism for Sebastian to make new friends in his year at the University of Southampton and made him feel like part of the furniture. He auditioned for [[Princess Ida 2019]] and was cast as Arac, the lead of the Viking Trio/Gama's sons and was thus granted the ability to wield a large war hammer. He then goes forth to be the best damn Drag version of the Foreman you ever did see for [[Double Feature 2019]]. Sebastian has blended seamlessly into LOpSoc, managing to become one of [[Katie Giles]] not-a-harem-but-also-definitely-a-harem and strike up the most stunning bromance ever with [[Joel Parkinson]].
