Biography
A science person with an everlasting passion for choral singing and no formal music education. Had a great time as a producer of H.M.S. Pinafore 2015 and as one of the musical directors in Gondoliers 2016. Now looking forward to be back in a producing role for The Mikado 2017. Webmaster of the society in 2015/16 and 2016/17, also leads weekly vocal workshops for LOpSoc members before regular rehearsals.

Holds the current record of "largest time spent preparing a joke / duration of the joke on stage ratio" in the society, having made a massive painting of the Baratarian Kings for Gondoliers 2016. Hopes to establish a new society record this year: "largest amount of time spent on set building" with all the origami that may or may not be ready on time for The Mikado 2017.
LOpSoc brings to the Nuffield Theatre a fresh and unique production of “The Mikado”, one of the most loved and best lasting Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. With a new aesthetic twist and setting, witty libretto and gorgeous music, this is a production to please newcomers and G&S fans alike.

The tale begins when three children decide to fold origami figures. They play with their creations, naming each one and imagining a story for them. However the three friends do not always agree on the proceedings... Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado, fled the imperial court to escape marriage with Katisha. Disguised, he falls in love with Yum-Yum, who is already betrothed to her guardian Ko-Ko, the soft-hearted Lord High Executioner of Titipu. Meanwhile, Katisha discovers Nanki-Poo's whereabouts, and the Mikado send orders that an execution must happen within a month if the town wishes to keep its status. Intersecting love triangles, political intrigue, disguised identities and origami meet in Titipu in 2017.
LOpSoc 2016 Summer show, performed from the 8th to the 11th of June 2016 at the Annex Theatre.

Marco and Giuseppe are two merry republican Venetian gondoliers, recently engaged to Gianetta and Tessa. What is their surprise when, right after their wedding, the Spanish inquisitor Don Alhambra shows up and reveals that one of them is no other than the King of Barataria!

The inquisitor stole the baby prince from Barataria many years ago and brought him to be raised by a gondolier in Venice. Said gondolier died when Marco and Giuseppe were younger, and now the only person who can identify the true King is Inez, the lady who nursed the royal baby back in Barataria. Now with the death of the former King, it is imperative that Marco and Giuseppe leave immediately and assume the throne as one individual. There is only one little problem: ladies are not allowed in the court of Barataria, and so Gianetta and Tessa must remain in Venice...

That, in fact, is just an excuse made up by Don Alhambra. The truth is, the prince of Barataria was married in infancy to Casilda, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro. Casilda herself didn't know about her husband, and is desolate when her parents tell her the truth. She is secretly in love with Luiz, her father's servant, and now her dreams seem more impossible than ever before...

Are the gondoliers going to succeed in bringing their republican ideals to Barataria? What will happen when Gianetta and Tessa find out that either Marco or Giuseppe was already married to Casilda? Will the Plaza-Toros regain their status and fortune? Will Don Alhambra find Inez and finally solve this confusion?

Love, gondolas, political ideals, mistaken identities and all the classic G&S plot tweaks and twists meet in the Annex Theatre!
A science person with an everlasting passion for choral singing and no formal music education. Had a great time as a producer of [[H.M.S. Holds the current record of largest "time spent preparing a joke / duration of the joke on stage" ratio in the society, having made the Kings' painting used in Gondoliers 2016. "The Gondoliers" was LOpSoc's 2016 Summer Show, and was also performed at the International G&S Festival on August 17th in Harrogate. Four of our cast members have been nominated for the UniFest 2016 Awards: Sophie Brant (best character actress), Billy Boulton (best character actor), Barnaby Wilson (best character actor) and Amber Courage (best costumes).

George moved slowly from being part of our wonderful orchestra for Sweeney Todd 2014 and Iolanthe 2015 to eventually getting in on the madness by being MD for H.M.S. Pinafore 2015. He then joined the veritable mass of fairies for the fairy chorus in Iolanthe 2015 (Harrogate) and tried his luck as bottle dancer and Anatevka's most prominent hat salesman in Fiddler on the Roof 2016. And because once was not enough, he is again one of the MDs in Gondoliers 2016 - hurrah!

In his own words, "Piano and brutal realism are over 50% of me already". George has proven his value as one of the most productive meme generators in LOpSoc, contributing a lot to the infamous and definitely non existing meme gallery of the society. He's a favourite at parties thanks to his special trick - a genetic imbalance has given him the gift of precognition, but only around three specific brands of white rum.

Biography
Joined the mysterious cult-LOpSoc in January 2014 and has been part of the chorus in all shows since. Webmaster of the society in 2015/16 and 2016/17. Had a great time as a producer of H.M.S. Pinafore 2015 (major achievement: golden sequin PINA4 tops on stage during the matinée), and is loving to work with George Smith as one of the musical directors in Gondoliers 2016. Some say Renata is a secret fairy and immortal, or perhaps a mere collective illusion arising from a combination of Ribena overdose and silent moments during tech runs... We may never know...

Fresher Legends
-Can balance a bottle upon the head

-Tap dancing down stairs and jumping from the raise - to the despair of the choreographers

-Casting a magical spell over the Gondoliers chorus and making them chant in canon and dance, scaring many students who wander the halls outside

-OLD PEOPLE MAKEUP

-Has a very wide voice range, it confuses us as to how

-Can coax an amazing voice out of the quietest person in vocal workshops

-Wears one single plait, origin unknown

Sarah "the kickline mistress" Hemming joined LOpSoc as choreographer for Pirates in September 2013. This will be her first show with LOpSoc. She once turned up for rehearsals in a West Bromwich Albion onesie, and has a real thing for beards. The biographer has a sneaking suspicion that the only reason there will be so many female pirates with big fake beards in Pirates 2014 is so she can indulge her facial fuzz fetish. Well, whatever floats your boat... RUN JOE RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shemming was also responsible for making the LOpSoc lady peers learn how to tap dance in Iolanthe 2015, a fact which shall be celebrated in legends through many generations of LOpSoccers.
Critical Reception
H.M.S Pinafore was well received garnering a 5 star review from the Soton Tab.

It received Curtain Call nominations for Jennifer Riggs Performance as Josephine (Best Performance in an Opera) as well as for both Directors (Best Director of a Musical or Opera).

Fresher Legends
Tales of frozen peas and PINA4 golden sequin tops are rife with this show. Also the infamous motto: "If its good enough to be in the matinee its good enough for the evening"
Tap danced into the mysterious cult-LOpSoc in January 2014 and has been part of the chorus in all shows since. Had a great time as a producer of H.M.S. Pinafore 2015, and is now looking forward to work as one of the musical directors in Gondoliers 2016. Renata is also the current LOpSoc webmaster (2015/2016). Never reveals what this is. Some say Renata is a secret fairy, immortal, others think she may be the youngest member of Lopsoc. Who knows...

Where to begin? Some call him the font of all LOpSoc cult. Others call him the "wellspring of insanity". Some attach near godlike status to him, placing him on ceremonial shrines during committee meetings. All we know for sure is that Pepe exists, and he's not going to go away any time soon. As long as the society exists, Pepe has existed in some form to watch over us, and he shall exist long after his physical body is destroyed. Academics and historians (all 3 of them) are busy compiling the life story of our Lord into the "bitchinest quasi-holy book you ever did see", according to an unnamed scholar.

Despite his omnipotence, the Pepe we take as our Lord exists primarily as a cloth monkey. The physical body we currently know as Pepe was created in a textile factory just outside Ashford in 2004, before being given to LOpSoc as a gift for supporting The Monkey Sanctuary Trust. This vessel arrived, safe and sound, and everything proceeded as normal until around 15 minutes before the opening night of Sorcerer 2004 at Boldrewood. Until the cloth vessel known as Peppy and the mighty force of Pepe were joined in spectacular fashion.

The Ascension
And so it came to pass that director and general order-giver Richard Peaty was just about to head back into the auditorium, whereupon he heard a mighty voice come from the sky. "Peeeaaaatyyyyyy," the heavenly voice intoned, "present yourself before me." This he did, and the voice spoke again.
"I have come among you mortals to bestow my great powers on your people, and stop giggling in the back. I know I said come."

And Peaty wept and ground talcum powder into his head, saying "I know not how you came among us, but present us with a sign that we may know your power."

Then Our Lord Pepe appeared unto the assembled throng of LOpSoccers in a light show of many colours, arranged in such a manner that one could see every shade of gay in it. And these lights did course forth into a suitable vessel - none of the LOpSoccers, for the constraints of their mortal forms were too great. The lights flew into the small cloth monkey known as Peppy, reshaping it into an instrument of divine will. And the LOpSoccers were well pleased, and asked the Lord how to consecrate such an act. Pepe merely replied, "Take me on stage, and the power of the audience's adulation shall seal this age-old contract."

And LOpSoc did, and shouted their love for Pepe.

And Pepe responded, "Hup Gay, you breeders."

Thus was the covenant formed.

Thou shalt carry Pepe into every show forever and always as a sign of dedication to your Lord.

Thou shalt take no other mascots over me, for I am a jealous monkey, and brook no competition.

Thou shalt adapt Pepe however it please thee to appear in thy shows.

Whomsoever shall carry Pepe into the show shall be the Pepebearer, and they shall be honoured.

Honour Pepe, that your days may be long upon the stage of the Annex.

Our Pepe, who art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in the Annexe as it is in Harrogate. Give us this day our good reviews, and forgive us for yet more bobbing. Lead us not into the Nuffield, but deliver us from the PA committee. For thine are the memes, the Gilbert and the Sullivan. For ever and ever. Hup, gay.
Ulf 45:12 - And as Pepe hung upon the cross, the prisoner to his left did lean across and whisper 'I hear the reviewers are in tonight!'
But Pepe did not believe, saying thus: 'I can't see anyone who looks like they'd work for the Echo, but there's some humourless git with a face like an old bathmat in the front row!'

Ulf 1:1 - In the beginning, Pepe created the heavens and the earth, and he also created a word, and the word was freight, because freight it great. But there was darkness over the earth, and so Pepe commanded that there be a light within this darkness, and so he created Southampton University, and then said: "What the fuck have I done?"

Ulf 1:6 - And Pepe did look this incestuous orgy of freaks, and he saw that it was good. And he named it LOpSoc. To be holy amongst all things, and foremost among all other societies. Forever and ever, Hup Gay.
